Ticks can be found on any part of the hedgehog's body but in particular around the eyes, ears and tail. Severe infestations can cause anaemia. Ticks suck blood and then drop off in the hedgehog's nest when full. Care is needed when removing them so that the mouthparts of the tick are not left behind to go septic. Smother with vegetable oil, leave for a few minutes and they should release their grip and drop off. Remove before they reattach. The photo shows a young hedgehog brought to us covered in ticks - so many they were life threatening.
