b4 adopt a hedgehog

hello there, i now about finding a hedgehog for my companion, i don,t sure what type of hedgehog from the local store, it,s is white in colour and about five inch. i have a few question before take them as pet like this :

1. female or male -how to tell if they are male or female
2. Diet-what these fellow eat? i heard the hedgehog are insectivorous
3. bonding- some hedgehog i have see are very tame and act as hamster, other turn themselves into the prickly ball when closed
4. pocket pet- do they suitable as pocket pet ?

Sorry, we only give information on the wild European hedgehog and no other species. Hedgehogs do not make good pets.
